Whoever Slew (4) Whoever Slew (7)

Mr Benton (Sir Ralph Richardson) arrives at the home of Mrs Forrest (Shelley Winters). Albie (Michael Gothard) takes his hat and brings him a drink, with brusque efficiency.

Benton is here to conduct a séance, so that Mrs Forrest can converse with her dead daughter, Katherine. They all sit down together, and begin.

Whoever Slew (30) Whoever Slew (33)

Albie appears afraid.

Whoever Slew (34) Whoever Slew (26)

His fear turns to wonder, as what purports to be Katherine’s voice is heard. Mrs Forrest ('Auntie Roo') has a tearful conversation with her 'daughter.'

Whoever Slew (35) Whoever Slew (38)

Albie is in the kitchen preparing a turkey, when Mr Harrison (High Griffith) delivers another.

Whoever Slew (39) Whoever Slew (41)

Mr Harrison demands payment of his last bill before he will surrender it.

Whoever Slew (44) Whoever Slew (46)

Albie prompts Clarine (Judy Cornwell) to use her feminine wiles to help persuade him to leave the bird, and wait longer for his money.

Whoever Slew (50) Whoever Slew (56)

Albie then goes to Auntie Roo and softens her up with some sympathetic observations about last night’s séance, and how it affects them all.

Whoever Slew (57) Whoever Slew (59)

Then he asks her for money to pay Mr Harrison, adding something extra to the bill, for himself.

Whoever Slew (62) Whoever Slew (66)

Some children arrive for the orphans' Christmas party. Albie spots two would-be gatecrashers.

Whoever Slew (69) Whoever Slew (70)

He apprehends Christopher (Mark Lester) and Katy (Chloe Franks), and threatens to cut Christopher's tongue out.

Whoever Slew (72) Whoever Slew (73)

But he's just kidding! He takes them along to the party. They are allowed to stay.

Whoever Slew (79) Whoever Slew (80)

When the children have been put to bed, it's time for another séance.

Whoever Slew (83) Whoever Slew (95)

Albie has to move aside, so that Katherine's teddy can join in.

Whoever Slew (96) Whoever Slew (101)

Albie knows that the voice of Katherine is being supplied by Clarine, down the dumb waiter, so he is spooked when he hears someone come in.

Whoever Slew (103) Whoever Slew (110)

With what appears to be genuine concern for Auntie Roo, he explains to her that this little girl is Katy, not her daughter.

Whoever Slew (113) Whoever Slew (116)

He lets Auntie Roo convince herself that Katy is, in fact, her daughter, reborn. Then he collects his cut of what Roo has paid Benton for his 'services.'

Whoever Slew (120) Whoever Slew (124)

It is Christmas morning. Roo compliments Albie on how well he's decorated the tree, and he and Clarine enjoy the festivities.

Whoever Slew (127) Whoever Slew (128)

Albie finds Christopher and Katy investigating the shed where Roo's dead husband, Mr Forrest, used to keep his magical gear.

Whoever Slew (129) Whoever Slew (130)

He takes great delight in giving them a scare.

Whoever Slew (134) Whoever Slew (133)

Aunty Roo performs "Tit Willow" for the children. Albie doesn't bother to hide his contempt.

Whoever Slew (141) Whoever Slew (144)

Having ejected Christopher, who had tried to stay behind to look for his missing sister Katy, Albie realises that Auntie Roo has kidnapped Katy, and locked her in a secret room.

Whoever Slew (150) Whoever Slew (153)

This is the chance he's been waiting for. His uniform is abandoned, along with his deferential attitude; he calls her by her stage name, and even lights a cigarette in her presence.

Whoever Slew (157) Whoever Slew (160)

Lounging on the sofa, he tells her that he and Clarine are leaving.

Whoever Slew (164) Whoever Slew (166)

Then he challenges her about Katy's whereabouts - says he knows where she is, and demands the princely sum of two thousand pounds, not to go to the police.

Whoever Slew (168) Whoever Slew (172)

He even has Auntie Roo's cheque book ready in his pocket!

Whoever Slew (174) Whoever Slew (179)

The last, and unkindest cut is when he tells her that she can now get Mr Benton's services more cheaply, because he will no longer have to split his fee, to pay Clarine for pretending to be Roo's dead daughter, Katherine.
